Let There Be Light

The central idea behind this renovation was to bring spaciousness and light to a north-facing apartment in Berlin. The apartment, which had stood empty for years and was in dire need of renovation, had a typical Berlin floor plan: a long, dark hallway leading to small, enclosed rooms.

The client was determined to exploit the apartment's potential – and I had the pleasure of making this a reality. My approach was a radical but well-thought-out intervention: by removing all non-load-bearing walls, a continuous window front was exposed. Together with light-coloured floors, this formed the basis for a completely new room layout.

The spacious living and kitchen area now blends harmoniously with the other rooms. Subtle visual connections link the rooms, making the apartment appear more spacious than it actually is, while ensuring that daylight flows into every corner.

The sleeping area fits seamlessly into the open concept: despite its intimacy, it contributes to the overall spaciousness of the apartment.

The room concept combines different qualities of use: a balanced mix of retreats and open areas, different visual connections between inside and outside, and deliberate contrasts in materials and colours – creating a harmonious yet exciting atmosphere.
